But games of chance are as old as mankind itself and it is therefore not surprising that they have been immortalized in works of art, films, and books in every era.

The Kardas Harps
The important Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is considered one of the founders of Roman Baroque painting. In addition to scenes of daily life, images of saints, and altarpieces, among his works there is also a picture entitled “The Kardas Harps”. The work of art was created around 1595 and shows gambling in Italy. The picture shows a young man who has apparently gotten involved with scammers and is unlikely to win the card game. The scene seems all the more menacing because one of the scammers has a dagger on his belt.
At the Roulette Table in Monte Carlo
Many art lovers are probably familiar with Edvard Munch’s “Scream”, but the Norwegian painter also immortalized a scene from a casino. The work is entitled “At the Roulette Table in Monte Carlo”. The artist himself liked to visit the casinos in Monte Carlo and spend his free time playing casino games. The oil painting from 1892 shows people grouped around a roulette table, anxiously awaiting the outcome. The best-known example is certainly Paul Cézanne’s picture “The Card Players”. The paint was sold to the state of Qatar in 2011 for $250 million. This picture belongs to a series of five paintings, all of which were created at the end of the 19th century. Each one shows two card players deep in their game and concentrating on their cards. Sometimes they show two players, and sometimes several people take part in the card game. The paintings all exude tranquility and depict ordinary people. The works of art are exhibited in the most famous museums and galleries worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where they delight visitors.
