Now, early to mid 1890s, French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne painted The Card Players series. And while we will even find some gambling games in Edvard Munch Painting Collection, the most popular ones were being painted by the less popular painters who rose to their fame primarily because of their artwork that were based on casino games.
Perhaps, the most famed among them all is the artwork that everyone has either heard or seen which is the “Dogs Playing Poker”. This one is a work painted by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. Would you believe that this painting was made at end of 19th and start of 20th century? It is with a purpose of advertising smoking and cigar. And truth is, it is only 1 of the 18 pieces of oil paintings made. The first was entitled Poker Game which was sold for over 658,000 dollars in 2015 at a Sotheby’s New York Sale.
While this was deemed to be a kitsch for quite some time, critics say that it may be used as satire for modern society.
